Certificate in Welding & Fabrication

Overview

This is a hands-on technical program designed to equip students with the fundamental skills and knowledge required in the welding and metal fabrication industry. This course provides a strong foundation in different welding techniques, metalworking processes, safety procedures, and blueprint interpretation, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for employment or self-employment in the welding and fabrication sector.

What You Will Learn

Introduction to Welding & Fabrication

This introductory module provides students with a basic understanding of welding as a trade, the various types of metals used in fabrication, and the essential tools and equipment required for welding. Students will explore the history and applications of welding in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and automotive repair.

Welding Processes & Techniques

Students will be trained in various welding techniques used in different industries. The course covers Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), commonly used for structural fabrication; Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG), which is preferred for industrial applications due to its speed and efficiency; Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG), ideal for precision welding in aerospace and stainless steel fabrication; and Oxy-Acetylene Welding and Cutting, a technique used for both welding and cutting metal sheets and pipes.

Understanding these processes will enable students to select the appropriate welding method based on the type of material, project requirements, and industry standards.

Metal Fabrication & Structural Work

Fabrication is a crucial part of welding, involving the measurement, cutting, bending, and assembling of metal structures. This module teaches students how to interpret technical drawings, measure materials accurately, and use cutting tools such as grinders, shears, and plasma cutters. Practical sessions will focus on creating various structures, including gates, doors, frames, and industrial components.

Blueprint Reading & Interpretation

To excel in welding and fabrication, students must be able to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings. This course component trains students in understanding welding symbols, dimensions, and schematics to ensure accuracy in metalworking projects. Learning this skill will help students execute tasks with precision, reducing material wastage and improving efficiency.

Safety & Health in Welding

Safety is a top priority in the welding industry. This module covers personal protective equipment (PPE), such as welding helmets, gloves, and flame-resistant clothing. Students will also learn how to handle hazardous materials, prevent fire accidents, and implement safety measures in a welding workshop. Additionally, first aid training will be provided to equip students with basic emergency response skills.

Workshop Practice & Hands-on Training

Practical training is a significant part of the program, allowing students to apply their knowledge in real-world welding and fabrication tasks. They will work in a well-equipped workshop, practicing different welding positions, joint types, and fabrication techniques under the supervision of experienced instructors.

Pipe Welding & Fitting

Pipe welding is essential in industries such as construction, plumbing, and oil and gas. This module trains students on pipe preparation, welding positions (1G, 2G, 5G, and 6G), and joining techniques to ensure leak-proof and structurally sound pipe connections. Special emphasis is placed on maintaining high-quality standards, as pipe welding plays a crucial role in infrastructure and industrial applications.

Quality Control & Inspection

Welding quality control ensures that welded structures are strong, durable, and meet industry standards. In this module, students will learn about weld defect detection, visual inspection techniques, and non-destructive testing methods such as ultrasonic and radiographic testing. These skills are essential for ensuring that welded components can withstand mechanical stress and environmental conditions.

Entrepreneurship & Business Skills

Many skilled welders go on to establish their own workshops or metal fabrication businesses. This module equips students with the knowledge required to run a successful business, including cost estimation, material sourcing, customer relations, and marketing strategies. Understanding how to manage a welding business will provide graduates with the confidence to become self-employed or expand their services to meet market demands.

Career Opportunities

Welder

Graduates can work as professional welders in construction companies, manufacturing industries, automotive workshops, shipbuilding, and repair yards. Skilled welders are needed to join and repair metal structures, ensuring durability and strength in various projects.

Fabrication Technician

A fabrication technician specializes in metalworking and structural assembly. This role involves cutting, shaping, and assembling metal parts according to blueprints. Fabrication technicians work in industries such as steel production, construction, and engineering firms.

Pipe Welder

Pipe welders play a crucial role in infrastructure development, working on pipelines for water supply, oil and gas transportation, and industrial machinery. This career requires precision welding skills and an understanding of pipe alignment and fitting techniques.

Workshop Assistant/Technician

Graduates can work in metal fabrication workshops, assisting with machine operations, welding, and repair tasks. Technicians support the production of metal products used in various applications, from household furniture to industrial machinery components.

Structural Welder

Structural welders work on large-scale projects such as bridges, high-rise buildings, and transmission towers. They use advanced welding techniques to join heavy steel components, ensuring that structures meet engineering safety standards.

Self-Employment (Welding & Fabrication Workshop Owner)

With the skills acquired from the program, graduates can start their own welding and fabrication workshops, offering services such as metal gate and door fabrication, vehicle body repair, and custom metalwork. The program’s business skills module will help graduates understand how to manage and grow their own businesses.
