Introduction to Garment Cutting & Tailoring
This module introduces students to the fashion and textile industry, covering the history of tailoring, fabric types, and basic sewing tools and equipment. Students will also learn about garment production processes, from concept to finished product.
Textile Selection & Fabric Handling
Understanding different types of fabrics is crucial for garment cutting and tailoring. This module covers fabric properties, selection criteria for different designs, and handling techniques to ensure durability and quality in garment production.
Pattern Drafting & Designing
Students will learn how to create clothing patterns based on body measurements, ensuring proper fit and style. This module includes drafting patterns for skirts, blouses, dresses, trousers, and traditional attire such as gomesi and kanzu, catering to Uganda’s fashion needs.
Garment Cutting Techniques
Precision in garment cutting is essential for producing well-fitting clothes. Students will practice laying fabric, marking patterns, cutting techniques, and handling different cutting tools to minimize fabric waste while achieving high accuracy.
Sewing Machine Operation & Maintenance
The ability to operate and maintain a sewing machine is a key skill for tailors. This module teaches students how to use different types of sewing machines, troubleshoot common issues, and perform basic maintenance to ensure smooth operation.
Stitching & Sewing Techniques
Students will learn various stitching techniques, including straight stitch, zigzag stitch, overlock stitch, hemming, and buttonholing. This module also covers seam finishing methods to enhance the durability and aesthetics of garments.
Garment Assembly & Finishing
Once garments are cut and stitched, they need proper finishing. This module focuses on assembling different parts of a garment, adding zippers, buttons, and decorative trims, and applying professional finishing touches such as ironing and pressing.
Traditional & Modern Fashion Design
Uganda’s clothing industry includes both traditional and modern fashion trends. Students will explore designing and tailoring African wear, corporate attire, bridal wear, and casual clothing, ensuring versatility in garment production.
Entrepreneurship & Business Skills
This module prepares students to start and manage their own tailoring business. Topics include pricing strategies, marketing techniques, customer service, record-keeping, and business registration. Graduates will learn how to grow their businesses and compete effectively in the fashion industry.
Quality Control & Garment Inspection
Ensuring high-quality standards is key in tailoring. Students will be trained in garment inspection techniques, identifying common defects, and making necessary adjustments to maintain customer satisfaction.
Fashion Trends & Customer Relations
Understanding fashion trends and customer preferences is vital in the tailoring business. This module teaches students how to analyze fashion trends, take customer orders, and provide personalized services to build a loyal client base.

Work in tailoring shops or start a personal tailoring business specializing in custom clothing, uniform production, and repairs.
Fashion Designer
Use creativity and garment-making skills to design and produce unique fashion pieces for the local and international market.
Pattern Maker
Work in clothing production companies, designing patterns and ensuring accurate garment cutting for mass production.
Sewing Machine Operator
Join a textile or garment manufacturing company, handling industrial sewing machines to produce large quantities of clothing.
Boutique Owner
Start a boutique or retail store, designing, tailoring, and selling fashionable garments to customers.
Costume Designer
Specialize in creating custom outfits for events such as weddings, cultural performances, and theater productions.
Self-Employment (Tailoring & Fashion Business Owner)
Use the acquired skills to establish a garment-making business, offering tailoring, alterations, and custom dressmaking services.
